Liverpool 3-1 Lyon: Roberto Firmino and Harry Wilson strikes secure win in their last pre-season game before Community Shield clash with Man City

Liverpool managed a 3-1 victory against Lyon on Wednesday evening.

The Champions League holders won courtesy of a Roberto Firmino strike on his return to club action, an own goal and youngster Harry Wilson hitting a long-range effort into the top corner.

It was perfect preparation for the challenge of facing Manchester City in the Community Shield next weekend, with this being Liverpool’s final pre-season game.

Jurgen Klopp was able to welcome back Alisson, Firmino, Xherdan Shaqiri, Mohamed Salah and Naby Keita for the first time during pre-season.

It seemed there was an element of rustiness at play for at least one of those who had spent his summer away on international duty.

While the game would eventually conclude in ideal fashion for the Reds, it began badly after an error from Alisson.

The goalkeeper missed a cross into the box and in an attempt to recover, Liverpool’s stopper gave away a penalty.

With just four minutes on the clock, former Manchester United forward Memphis Depay stepped up and tucked home the spot kick to put Lyon ahead.

But Firmino saved his compatriot’s blushes shortly after, hitting a left-footed effort into the back of the net from a tight angle.

Ki-Jana Hoever then celebrated his first professional contract, which he signed on Wednesday, by sending an excellent cross into the box that was turned in by Lyon’s Joachim Andersen.

Shortly after the break, Wilson struck from distance to extend Liverpool’s lead and wrap up the victory.
