Boy’s classmates give him hugs as he returns to school after surviving Hurricane Dorian

This is the heartwarming moment a three-year-old boy’s overjoyed classmates gave him hugs when he returned to his Florida school safe and sound after surviving Hurricane Dorian in The Bahamas.   

Little Makai Simmons appeared emotional as he was welcomed back to the Learning City Academy in Pembroke Pines on Monday after missing a week due the deadly storm. 

His mom Tekara Capron, 22, shared the touching video, writing: ‘My heart. Today was my son’s first day back to school in the USA after experiencing Hurricane Dorian in Freeport. 

‘The love he received from his friends as soon as he walked into class was so touching.’ 

Makai Simmons and his mom Tekara Capron had traveled to the island to visit their relatives in Freeport over Labor Day before they ‘lost everything’, including clothes and toys, after their home on Grand Bahama flooded

The family ‘lost everything’, including clothes and toys, after their home on Grand Bahama flooded in the Category 5 storm. 

The mother and son had traveled to the island to visit their relatives in Freeport over Labor Day. 

They made the journey back to the US on a cruise ship on Friday evening after waiting in line for 13 hours.  

Since Tekara, who lived in The Bahamas until she was 19-years-old, shared the video on Monday it has drawn a series of positive comments from Instagram users. 

One said: ‘This is the feel good moment we all need.’

Another added: ‘If only we all had the hearts as pure as that of children. This is soo cute.’ 

Tekara told ABC: ‘As soon as he walked in, everyone just jumped up. It was really emotional.

‘The love we got when we got back to the U.S. was unbelievable. 

‘I just want people to know that the Bahamas is a nation with loving people and a rich culture. We will gladly accept any help that anybody can give, and are extremely grateful for everyone who has been so loving.

‘Right now, we’re seeing so much trauma, so to see the love that kids are showing, I thought that was beautiful. The rest of the world needed to see that too, especially the Bahamas.’ 

She had earlier shared pictures of Makai wearing his spiderman vest to help ‘to go save the children in the water’.

The mother wrote: ‘House got flooded. Like much of my island, we lost everything. But I don’t care, they are material things. We have life, which cannot be replaced. 

‘In my 22 years of life, I have never seen anything like this. But at Kai’s 3rd year of life, he has experienced a storm that he refers to as a monster. A storm that makes him jump and hide at the sound of strong wind. A storm that inspired him to be brave and put on his life vest, saying “Mommy.. I have to go save the children in the water!” 

‘He doesn’t even like to hear the name Dorian. I felt this for the kids. Thank you to all of my family and friends who checked up on us continuously throughout the storm and even offered their help. Thank you to EVERYONE who is already helping my people. MOST IMPORTANTLY, thank God for getting us through this.’ 

At least 50 people died in the Bahamas after the slow-moving, Category 5 hurricane stuck the islands. Thousands of people have been left homeless.
