Leaf it out! 13% of British adults say they don’t remember ever seeing an oak tree

  • Survey of 2,000 adults found only a quarter of adults can identify garden plants
  • 33 per cent of adults had missed out on climbing a tree as a child

You might expect everybody to have seen a sunflower or played conkers at some point – but you’d be barking up the wrong tree.

A survey of 2,000 adults has found only a quarter of adults can even identify the types of plants and trees in their own garden.

Some 13 per cent of respondents said they had never actually seen an oak tree, while 19 per cent said they cannot recall seeing a sunflower.

The study, by Honest Organic, also found many adults had missed out on classic childhood activities, including climbing a tree (33 per cent) and playing conkers (24 per cent). 

Honest Organic’s Charlotte Kerr said: ‘As we continue to live busy lives… it seems we’ve forgotten to notice amazing areas of nature around us.
