Mauricio Pochettino believes his Tottenham side are struggling with hangover from last season

‘When you play the Champions League final, no one is the same after because the expectation is different’: Mauricio Pochettino insists Tottenham are struggling with hangover from last season’s campaign

  • Mauricio Pochettino believes his side are paying for last season’s success
  • Tottenham have started the league campaign off with two wins from six games
  • They also crashed out of the League Cup at the hands of Colchester

Mauricio Pochettino believes his Tottenham side are struggling because expectations have been raised following their appearance in the Champions League final.

Tottenham have started the Premier League campaign off in indifferent form with two wins, two draws and two defeats.

Pochettino’s side were also knocked out of the League Cup on Tuesday as League Two side Colchester upset the odds by knocking Tottenham out on penalties.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has spoken of his side’s indifferent form this season

And now Pochettino has put his side’s poor form down to how his team fared last year.

Pochettino, speaking ahead of his side’s next league clash with Southampton, said: ‘When you play the final of the Champions League, no one is the same after because the perception and expectation is different.

‘All that happens creates a new circumstance for the club which is different again and we need to try and find solutions like last season. I am convinced or sure that we are going to perform as well and we are going to fine.

‘Now we have one competition less but maybe last season, when we played in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup against Chelsea and lost in penalties too, maybe the second part of the season, fighting for the Champions League, some injuries and circumstances didn’t help us to perform.’
