Protesters were seen laying on the ground pretending to be dead next to signs reading: ‘climate denial is mass murder’ and ‘there is no future on a dead planet’.
‘It (riding a bike) also bypasses the traffic stoppages that are set to get more frequent as our politicians fail to take necessary action on climate change,’ the group said in a statement.
Among the protesters was Greens candidate for Brisbane Lord Mayor Kath Angus.
‘I’m really passionate about active transport. I’m a cyclist and I’ve had a lot of critical incidents so I think it’s really important that we draw attention to the lack of safety in the city,’ she told the Courier Mail.

Extinction Rebellion describes themselves as ‘an international movement that uses non-violent civil disobedience in an attempt to halt mass extinction and minimise the risk of social collapse’
‘I’ve come along to be an advocate for cycling and support some real action because I think that 20 years of being polite hasn’t done anything and personal action isn’t enough.’
No arrests have been made yet.
The group has further plans to shut down Brisbane’s CBD, scheduled for the Queen’s Birthday public holiday on October 7.
Activists have vowed to commit ‘non-violent civil disobedience’ to inconvenience Brisbane commuters.

The protest is not just scheduled in Brisbane, with the International Extinction Rebellion community holding events in various cities around the world on the same date.
The group are expecting thousands of activists to attend the rally, with the organisation running workshops educating protesters on how to conduct their demonstrations, as well as how to deal with police and media.
‘With certainty, we now know that failure to force swift and radical action on the climate crisis will result in the deaths of billions of humans and untold numbers of other species on this planet,’ the event post reads.
‘With this is mind, the International Extinction Rebellion community has chosen October 7th to bring mass non-violent civil disobedience to cities around the world.’
