A teenage couple had been dating just a few weeks before they were killed in a horror highway smash.

Lauren Quabba, 16, and Evan Fielder, 19, died when their car collided head-on with another vehicle on Queensland’s Bruce Highway about 7.30pm on Sunday.

The 17-year-old boy driving the other car was airlifted to hospital from the scene about 2km north of Babinda, near Cairns, in a serious condition.

Mr Fielder and Lauren only started seeing each other a few weeks ago, announcing their relationship on social media on October 4.

Lauren was a Year 12 student at Babinda State School and Mr Fielder a coach at his father Wayne’s business Baseline Tennis Coaching Academy.

Devastated friends comforted Lauren’s parents Rodney and Rhonda Quabba at their home in the tiny town of Bellenden Ker.

They paid tribute to a ‘sweet, bright young lady’ who had her whole life ahead of her until it was tragically cut short in an instant.

Lauren’s second cousin Jessica Ridolfi said she knew of many horrific crashed on the far north Queensland highway, but never thought one would involve her family.

‘I’ve pretty much watched her grow up. She was lovely girl,’ she told the Cairns Post.

‘She’d just go up and give everyone hugs and she was always happy and cheerful. I think the school will be very hurt today.’
