Cruz Hewitt is just like his dad as he replicates Lleyton Hewitt’s fist pump on the tennis court

Lleyton Hewitt was just another proud dad when he stepped out to watch his son, Cruz Hewitt, play in the Australian Open 2020 Play-off in Melbourne on Tuesday.

The 38-year-old former tennis champ was spotted beaming in the crowd as he witnessed his 10-year-old son competing in the 12-and-under division. 

The up-and-coming tennis star proved to be a chip off the old block, replicating his dad’s signature fist pump during the match.

Lleyton became well-known for holding his hand in a beak-like gesture in front of his face and shouting ‘C’mon!’ during triumphant moments in his tennis matches.

But he was more than happy to play the part of the punter during his son’s match, looking relaxed as he watched on. 

Standing with a group of other parents, Lleyton chatted and laughed with them as they took in the tournament.

Looking more and more like his dad, Cruz stepped onto the court in a pair of black shorts, which he teamed with a fluro orange T-shirt.

He donned a blue and orange baseball cap, and wore a sweatband around one of his wrists.

Meanwhile, Lleyton watched on intently from the sidelines, stepping out in a printed white T-shirt.

The former world number one tennis champ also donned a faded black baseball cap and black sunglasses.

‘The journey begins!’ he excitedly captioned a photo on Tuesday ahead of his match.  

The Australian Open 2020 Play-off gives emerging players the chance to earn a wildcard position in the first Grand Slam of the Australian Open 2020 in January.  

‘The AO Play-off is a great opportunity for our players who don’t have direct entry into the Australian Open to compete and earn their place in the main draw,’  Australian Open Tournament Director Craig Tiley told Tennis Australia last week.

Lleyton has previously spoken about his high hopes for Cruz’s tennis career, believing he’ll be playing in the Australian Open by the time he’s 14.   

He’s also said he hopes his son goes even further than he did during his stellar tennis career, which spanned 18 years.

‘Hopefully he gets a chance to play in this great event [the Australian Open] if he wants to. Hopefully he beats me,’ Lleyton said during the Australian Open in January, as reported by Woman’s Day.
