The 50-year-old is hopeful that the winger can blaze a trail for more American players to mix it in Europe with the world’s best.

He said: ‘As far as Americans in the European leagues go, Pulisic would be at the top. Hopefully we can see more of that. Youth soccer in America is big. There is a real commitment there.

‘My hope is that in eight to 10 years you’re going to see that generation actually having something to do with soccer around the world at a high level.

‘We’ll see, I don’t think it’s ever going to take over American football or basketball but it may take over ice hockey and baseball.

‘So it’s good to see Pulisic out there and hopefully more Americans can get up to his level.’

The Blues cruised to a deserved two-goal lead on Tuesday before Loic Remy pulled one back at his old stomping ground.

Lampard’s side then saw out an anxious few minutes to ensure they reached the knockout stages.
