A Whirlpool UK customer today tweeted footage of smoke pouring from her washing machine as she warned the model was not on the recall list – as thousands battled for answers on the phone after the firm’s website crashed.
The video, posted by Vicci Marshall on Sunday, showed an Indesit machine full of washing with smoke coming out of the open door after it had been turned off. She tweeted today: ‘Luckily I was stood next to it. Check your machines!’
Whirlpool released a list yesterday of dozens of recalled Hotpoint and Indesit appliances that have been found responsible for 79 household fires and ten injuries – but will not be given free repairs and replacements until January.
The US company was today branded ‘the biggest disgrace ever’ as its website remains down a day after the firm recalled half a million washing machines and told owners to unplug them over Christmas.
It comes just months after Whirlpool was forced to recall thousands of tumble dryers after they were also linked to dozens of fires.

The Whirlpool recall website remained down today due to ‘technical problems’, as this screengrab taken this morning shows
One angry customer tweeted a screenshot of their crashed website and wrote: ‘What an absolute disgrace. Genuine fear our washing machine is one at risk of fire so go to check and this is what I get!’

Jeremy Snelling raged: ‘First their tumble dryers, now their washing machines, surely this must be the end of Whirlpool as a company. Who in their right mind would buy a Whirlpool product ever again?’
And Nina Parker added: ‘Aren’t Whirlpool the biggest disgrace ever in the world of electrical appliances. A week before Christmas they declare their customers could burn to death through their negligence. Then their website magically dies…’
The delay in fixing or replacing the machines means affected families may not be able to wash their clothes over the festive period. Some might even have to wait until February for the necessary repairs.
Customers called Whirlpool a ‘disgrace’ while another claimed its customer service team ‘put their phone down on me’
Twitter user Colin Doherty yesterday shared a picture of what he said was a faulty door locking mechanism on a Hotpoint washing machine
The alert is another serious blow to Whirlpool following the recall of five million of its tumble dryers, again over fire risks.
One of its Hotpoint fridge freezers was also implicated in the Grenfell Tower tragedy – a claim contested by the manufacturer.
Recall ‘leaves Whirlpool’s reputation in tatters’ says Which?
Consumer rights group Which? slammed Whirlpool for causing ‘disruption’ to millions of people over Christmas – and urged customers to try and claim expenses back from Whirlpool.
Strategic policy adviser Sue Davies said: ‘This safety alert will cause huge disruption for millions of people who will have no washing machine over Christmas, and following the tumble dryer scandal, leaves Whirlpool’s reputation as a company that can be trusted on product safety in tatters.’
Meanwhile, consumer rights editor Adam French predicted customers would be able to recoup some of the costs involved.
He said: ‘We expect that you will be able to claim any out-of-pocket expenses you’ve had as a result of not being able to use your machine from Whirlpool or the retailer that sold it to you – as long as those expenses are ‘reasonable and foreseeable’.
The Hotpoint and Indesit are manufactured in eastern Europe and sold in the UK and Ireland, where the recall is happening.
It is not affecting the USA, a spokesman told MailOnline.
Sue Davies of the consumer group Which? said: ‘This safety alert will cause huge disruption for millions of people who will have no washing machine over Christmas.
Following the tumble dryer scandal this leaves Whirlpool’s reputation as a company that can be trusted on product safety in tatters.
‘People will rightly be asking what Whirlpool knew about these fire-risk machines and when, so there must now be a thorough investigation into this public safety issue.
‘We know the company has a track record for appearing to put corporate reputation ahead of public safety in its disgraceful handling of the unsafe tumble dryer crisis.
‘Customers will be hugely frustrated that this recall is not set to start for weeks and that they are not being offered refunds for machines from a brand they may no longer want to have in their homes.’

Residents of tower block that caught fire because of an Indesit tumble dryer receive compensation
Residents of a tower block that caught fire in 2016 due to an allegedly faulty Indesit tumble dryer have settled their legal claims against parent company Whirlpool, their lawyers have said.
The announcement of Friday’s settlement in relation to 37 residents of the Shepherd’s Bush tower at the time of the August 2016 blaze comes a day after Whirlpool announced it is recalling more than 500,000 Hotpoint and Indesit fire-risk washing machines.
The recall is Whirlpool’s second this year, after the company finally launched a full recall involving 500,000 dryers following a lengthy safety modification programme – involving the model involved in the Shepherd’s Bush fire – in July.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said it believed the blaze, which engulfed part of the high rise block and took 120 firefighters to bring under control, was caused by the faulty dryer. No-one was injured.
Thomas Jervis, a lawyer at law firm Leigh Day, which represented the residents in the civil claim against Whirlpool, said: ‘My clients have been through hell and back. I am pleased that we have been able to get Whirlpool to apologise and sort their claims out.’
A Whirlpool spokesman apologised and said: ‘We have for some time been seeking to compensate the families affected by the incident in Shepherd’s Bush.’
Whirlpool insisted safety was its priority but warned it would not have the capacity to mount an official recall – with the offer of replacements or repairs – until early January.
Given the scale of the undertaking it is possible that tens of thousands of households will be without a fully functioning and safe machine for months.
Whirlpool said those who continue to use their washer should use only cold water cycles of 20C or lower because this ‘significantly reduces the risk’.
It is doubling its call centre team to 800 customer service agents and sharply increasing production at its five washing machine factories in Europe to provide replacement models.
An extra 100 engineers will be taken on, along with fleets of vans to collect machines and deliver replacements.
Jeff Noel, who is vice-president of US-based Whirlpool, said: ‘We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and concern this may cause to our customers, particularly over the Christmas period, but we hope people will understand that we are taking action because people’s safety is our top priority.
‘Preparing for a recall of this scale is a complex operation and we are working tirelessly to ensure we are ready to start offering replacements or repairs to our customers from early January.’
The safety issue concerns the door lock system, which can – in rare instances – overheat when the heating element in the machine is activated. Only Hotpoint and Indesit brands are affected by the fault and none under the Whirlpool label.
Mr Noel added: ‘This is an issue we inherited from buying Indesit but, as the new owner, it is our responsibility to keep our customers safe.
‘We are recalling these products because it is the right thing to do for people’s safety and we will do whatever it takes to put the situation right for our customers.
‘By taking actions like this, we are bringing the company we acquired in line with Whirlpool’s industry-leading global safety and quality standards.’
The company has notified the Office for Product Safety and Standards – the UK product safety regulator – and has committed to set aside the necessary financial resources to conduct a full product recall.
Debbie Flint, 34, said her two-year-old son Jack had been playing on the kitchen floor in front of the machine moments before it exploded in 2015
Which? argues that the OPSS should be replaced with a new independent product safety regulator with real powers to hold companies to account.
Your rights: What you will be entitled to under the recall
If you own one of the washing machine models listed in the box below, you will have the right to either of the following:
- A free of charge like for like replacement washing machine
- A free of charge in home repair of your existing appliance.
It said: ‘This ongoing saga with Whirlpool demonstrates once again that our product safety system is not fit for purpose.’
Consumer champion Lynn Faulds Wood, who carried a review of the product recall system for the Government four years ago, said Whirlpool was moving too slowly.
‘An awful lot of people out there are complaining they cannot get through to find out if their machines are safe or not. This is very poor,’ she said.
‘It is appalling to say to people, many with children, that they should not be using their washing machine for what could be weeks.’
From house fires to destroying a family’s kitchen and ‘nearly blinding’ a toddler: Whirlpool’s shocking washing machine failures
We had to spend seven weeks in a hotel after a fire
Left: Louise Yusuf, 48, was forced out of her home. Right: The destroyed Hotpoint washing machine that was in their house
A family was forced out of its home for seven weeks after a Hotpoint washing machine caught fire.
Louise Yusuf, 48, put on a normal wash but within five minutes could smell burning and the machine quickly burst into flames.
She managed to get her two children, aged 14 and 19, out of the house and called the fire brigade. Her husband was at work.
‘We had to run outside in our pyjamas and we could see black smoke coming out of the side of the house and I thought, oh my gosh, this could be the house,’ said Mrs Yusuf.
‘Normally, I’d put on the washing machine on a timer and go out shopping – God only knows what might have happened if I’d done that.’
The blaze destroyed the fuse box and boiler meaning the family had to live in a hotel for seven weeks. There was also extensive smoke damage.

Mrs Yusuf, from Meopham in Kent, had owned the machine for about 18 months before the disaster in April. It is not known if it is among those involved in the safety alert.
At the time, Whirlpool, which owns Hotpoint, said: ‘Safety is our number one priority – we take every incident report extremely seriously.’
An exploding Hotpoint smashed our worktop and cupboards
A family’s kitchen was destroyed after their Hotpoint washing machine exploded and destroyed their worktops and cupboards.
Father-of-three Simon Bettridge, from Plymouth in Devon, said the Hotpoint appliance blew up while full of clothes, cracking the worktop surface above and shattering two adjoining cupboards and a sink.
Mr Bettridge, 43, a Citybus bus driver, said the situation caused his family and in particular his autistic daughter ‘a lot of pain and anguish’.
Mr Bettridge says the situation has caused his family and in particular his autistic daughter ‘a lot of pain and anguish
Mr Bettridge was out for the day with his three young children while his wife Zara, a 33-year-old waitress, stayed at home.
He explained she had put a load of washing on and popped out to her neighbour’s house, before returning a couple of hours later.
‘When she came back she thought we had been burgled,’ said Mr Bettridge, speaking in 2016. ‘She brought her friends in and then they realised the washing machine had exploded.
‘The fire brigade came out to make sure our home was safe and that there was no gas or water leak. Even they said they’d never seen anything like this before.
‘At some point the washing machine drum came apart and sent its load up through the top of the washing machine and destroyed a good chunk of the kitchen.
‘If a child had been stood anywhere near they would have been seriously injured.
‘Our disabled daughter, Oliviah, is very distraught. Autistic children don’t cope very well when there’s change, especially when it’s a negative one.’
Mr Bettridge said Hotpoint, who regularly service the machine, informed him a mechanic would not be able to come to the property for another ten days.
My son was playing inches away when our washing machine exploded
Debbie Flint, 34, said her two-year-old son Jack had been playing on the kitchen floor in front of the machine moments before it exploded.
Speaking in 2015, she said: ‘I was right by the machine cooking a bacon sandwich and Jack was playing near it. I had picked him up because I could smell his nappy and then it blew. Luckily, the glass did not hit him.
‘He was very lucky. Kids get fascinated with things like that and sometimes he puts his face near to the washing machine to watch it.
‘There were big chunks of glass. If he was by the machine, they could have hit him in the eyes or the face.’

Q&A: What Whirlpool models are affected and how grave is the danger? Your guide to the ongoing washing machine scandal
What machines are involved?
Almost 520,000 washing machines made between 2014 and February 2018. Three are Indesit models and 39 by Hotpoint, brands owned by Whirlpool.
What is the danger?
The fault has caused 79 fires, not all of them contained within the machines. Ten injuries have been reported.
Is my machine affected?
Details are online at the website washingmachinerecall.whirlpool.co.uk or by calling 0800 316 1442 (free).
What should I do?
Turn off your machine and unplug it. If you choose to use it, do so only with cold water cycles of 20C or lower.
What is Whirlpool offering?
A free replacement or repair but not until next month, if not later. This is because of the scale of the recall.
Where is the fault?
The door lock system can overheat and catch fire when the heating element in the machine is activated.
Is there a wider issue?
A Coroner blamed an electrical fault in the door of Hotpoint tumble dryer for a fire in Llanrwst, Denbighshire, in October 2014 that killed two men.
How good is Whirlpool’s safety record?
The firm was criticised by MPs and consumer groups over the failed recall in 2015 of 5.3million tumble dryers because of a fire risk linked to fluff accumulating around the heating element. It is estimated that more than 400,000 of these machines were still in homes in September.
Is there a link to the Grenfell fire tragedy?
Expert evidence to the public inquiry suggested a link between the wiring on a Hotpoint fridge freezer and the blaze that cost 72 lives in June 2017. Whirlpool has challenged this.
Miss Flint, from Telford, Shropshire, who had her machine for two-and-a-half years without any previous problems, added: ‘The washing machine was on spin and it just suddenly blew up.
‘I just heard shattering glass and, when I looked, there was steam coming out of it.
‘I was really shocked, it scared the life out of me and everyone I have spoken to cannot believe it as well. They have never heard anything like it.’
Miss Flint said it took ‘several calls’ to Hotpoint before an engineer was sent out after the explosion on April 23, 2015 – and only because she had bought insurance.
Less than a fortnight later on May 4, businesswoman Liz Reynolds suffered the same experience at her home in Harlow, Essex.
The 35-year-old, who runs a glass design business called Glitterazzi, said the blast involving her year-old machine was ‘potentially deadly’.
‘With no warning, the washing machine door exploded, sending huge chunks and triangle shards flying 15ft across my kitchen,’ she said.
‘When I have queries the cause and if this will happen again, I’m told it shouldn’t and we will have to wait and see.’
Mrs Reynolds, who lived with her husband Jamie and two children, Joe, 12, and George, 6, added: ‘Because it was Bank Holiday Monday, George was at home and he would have been in the kitchen with me except that my husband was with him.
‘It was pretty frightening. Had our son been there, the door is at eye level for him so he would have been in the firing line of all the glass.’
An explosion sent bits of plastic spraying around my kitchen
A mother-of-two was left shocked after her kitchen was wrecked – when her washing machine.
Lisa Leighton, 37, found her kitchen thick with smoke after hearing a loud bang in January 2016.
She had switched on the Hotpoint washing machine while she did a spot of housework at her home in Newthorpe, Notts.
Lisa Leighton, 37, found her kitchen thick with smoke after hearing a loud bang in January 2016
But just minutes after switching it on, an explosion ripped the door off and sent cupboard panels and pieces of plastic flying across the room.
Quick-thinking Lisa unplugged the electricity and called the fire service who cleared the smoke and removed the nine-year-old machine.
Ms Leighton, an office manager, from Newthorpe, Nottinghamshire, said: ‘The machine was on a fast spin when it exploded.
‘The front went flying off and the side of it came bursting out and it has messed up the units.
‘All the clothes were tangled around the drum and have also been ruined.
‘I have two boxer dogs and they were in the room at the time and one of them is only two years old and was hiding behind the other one shaking. My children were in another room.
‘The explosion was so loud the neighbours heard it and thought their grandchild had fallen out of bed.’
Ms Leighton, an office manager, from Newthorpe, Nottinghamshire, said: ‘The machine was on a fast spin when it exploded’
Ms Leighton said she was terrified after hearing the blast.
She added: ‘When I saw what had happened I was shaking too because if my children or dogs had been in front of the machine they would have been seriously injured.
‘I bought the machine from Currys nine years ago but it had been serviced in November and fitted with new parts.
‘When I called them to complain a customer service adviser laughed at me down the phone.’
