Reaching for one Tim Tam may seem like an innocent treat – but how long does it really take to burn off the chocolate biscuit?

A chart from Harvard Medical School data has revealed the amount of exercise you need to burn off a single Tim Tam, which contains 80 calories – and the results may shock you.

The guide is based on the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ average men (85.9kg) and women (71.1kg).

To move at a relatively leisurely pace of 5.5km per hour, women will require up to 20 minutes of walking while men need 15 minutes.

For general weight lifting, women require 21 minutes while men need 18 minutes or for a rigorous weight lifting session, women need 11 minutes while men require nine minutes. 

To work up a sweat in the gym, women will need up to eight minutes of boxing while men require just six minutes of sparring.

If you’re looking to take a dip in a 100-metre-length pool, you require up to 13 minutes of swimming, which is roughly about 10 laps.

For other water activities, women would require 13 minutes of snorkelling and 11 minutes of water skiing, while men need 11 minutes and nine minutes respectively.

Women can burn off 80 calories on a stationary bike if they can maintain a moderate pace for nine minutes, while men require nearly eight minutes.

Women would need at least eight minutes of running – not jogging – while men require seven minutes – but you’d need to maintain a pace of 8km per hour to really burn off a single Tim Tam.

For tennis, women would need to be actively playing for at least nine minutes on the court while men require eight minutes.

Surprisingly dancing, bowling, frisbee and general volleyball can burn a high amount of calories, with women requiring 21 minutes while men need 18 minutes.

Previous reports revealed a consumer would need to walk two hours and 11 minutes for 100g’s worth of Tim Tam – or five and a half of the chocolate biscuits.

‘The average Australian gets about a third of his or her kilojoules from snacks throughout the day but doesn’t do nearly enough exercise to burn this off,’ associate professor Owen Carter previously said.
