Forget pineapple! Swedish man sends Reddit users into meltdown by adding KIWIS to his pizza

A Swedish man has sent the Reddit food community into meltdown after posting an image of a pizza he had made for him, topped with kiwis.

Stellan Johansson, an enthusiast of the furry fruit, shared a picture to Facebook of the unique take on a classic that he had made in Skottorps Pizzeria, around 95 miles north of Malmo.

Stellan, who regularly cooks with kiwi and recently stuffed it into some chicken breasts with cheese, said he brought his own fruit to the pizzeria run by Turkish staff, and they obliged in making it for him because they are used to cooking up the classic dish with various twists.

Pineapple on pizza is something that divides people everywhere and when his picture made its way to Reddit, users were quick to dismiss Stellan’s inventive kiwi dish.

‘This makes me unreasonably angry,’ wrote one user in a post with more than 10,000 up votes and 450 comments, while a second person responded: ‘There’s nothing unreasonable about your anger.’

Another person theorised: ‘This is the slippery slope that permitting pineapple has resulted in.’

‘Find it hard to believe there’s freaks out there who would even do this,’ said another.

But Stellan insisted that it was tasty. He wrote: ‘This pizza was made at Skottorps Pizzeria in South Sweden. I had to bring my own kiwis to the place.

‘The pizza was good. My children loved it.’

As of the 2010 census, Skottorps had just 475 inhabitants and is closer to Denmark than it is to Sweden’s capital, Stockholm.

Sweden’s Scandinavian neighbour has over 750,000 immigrants, with each group’s cuisines offering up unique takes on traditional dishes.

It is common across the region that people from minority groups own pizzerias and takeaways.

This has given rise to a new Swedish favourite, the Afrikana Pizza – a regular base topped with banana, peanuts, mushrooms and curry powder on it, attributed to the country’s largely Somali, Ethopian and Sundanse populations.

During the furore over Stellan’s pizza, the Afrikana was mentioned dozens of times, with a surprising amount of admirers.

‘And I thought the Swedish banana pizza was bad,’ wrote one person before another person leaped to its defence, saying: ‘Banana, bacon, pineapple and garlic. Best. Ever.’

In May last year, New Zealand offered up its own weird take on pizza.

The chain took to Facebook to offer a limited edition Hawaiian spaghetti pizza, writing: ‘This is no joke! We’ve officially added Hawaiian SPAGHETTI pizza to our menu for a limited time only, with help from our friends at Wattie’s NZ! (no April Fools this time).’
