Married At First Sight producers used a cruel trick to manufacture drama at the wedding of Chris Nicholls and Vanessa Romito.

Daily Mail Australia understands that Chris was left waiting at the altar for an hour while Vanessa’s driver took her around the block several times to ‘create tension’.

The ceremony was filmed at Vaucluse House in Sydney on September 10.

A source explained: ‘Producers do this to create tension, heighten the [contestants’] nerves and ensure they get the rawest emotions when it’s time to film.

‘The weddings may only last a few minutes on TV, but in reality they can drag on for up to six hours to guarantee great footage and reactions.’

When Vanessa finally arrived for the ceremony, she filmed several takes getting out of her limousine with her maid of honour, Toobi, as Chris continued to wait.

Long wait! Chris, 37, was forced to spend almost an hour stood at the alter in front of all of their guests before Vanessa, 31, arrived. Pictured: Chris and his mother on their way to the wedding

A hair and makeup team then flocked around her to make sure she looked her best.

With Chris still waiting in front of all of their guests, Vanessa filmed several pieces to camera in which she discussed her fears and anxieties.

It was only when she was minutes from walking down the aisle that she became overwhelmed and fell to the ground in tears.

Vanessa admitted that she was so self conscious about her acne scars that she avoids going out in daylight.

‘I think I’m probably most attractive at night, when the lighting is dim,’ she said.

‘[Acne] damaged my confidence a lot,’ she added. ‘I don’t think anybody would truly be satisfied with this. I’ve always felt like I was going to be left on the shelf.’

Channel Nine declined to comment.
