BUNDESLIGA WEEKEND PREVIEW: Bayern set to continue fine form

Six points separate the top five in the Bundesliga and there are no signs of the epic tussle for league glory ending soon.

Bayern Munich are expected to keep up their fine form when they face bottom-side Paderborn on Friday night.

While rivals RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund head into their matches following two big victories in the Champions League in midweek. Here, Sportsmail looks ahead to the German top-flight action this weekend.

FRIDAY

Bayern Munich vs Paderborn

7.30pm UK time; Live on BT Sport 3

Since suffering defeat at the hands of title rivals Borussia Monchengladbach at the start of December, Hansi Flick’s side have been in fine form.

Bayern have not lost since that 2-1 loss on December 7 and their only draw in that period came against RB Leipzig two weeks ago.

After an inconsistent first half of the season Bayern are very much on the charge as they look to continue their German top-flight dominance.

Paderborn will have to stop prolific forward Robert Lewandowski, who leads the way in the league goalscoring charts with 23 and is well in the race to win the European Golden Shoe.

The basement boys have conceded 47 goals this campaign – the third highest in the Bundesliga.

Although Paderborn are not cut adrift at the foot of the table, just one point off Fortuna Dusseldorf in the relegation play-off spot.

SATURDAY

Hertha Berlin vs Cologne

2.30pm UK time

The hosts will be looking to get some momentum going after struggling to string results together.

After losing to Mainz a fortnight ago Hertha Berlin secured a 2-1 win at strugglers Paderborn last weekend.

Cologne sit just three points behind Hertha and so could leapfrog them with a win.

Goals could be in short supply at the Olympiastadion Berlin with both sides scoring less than 30 league goals this season.

Borussia Monchengladbach vs Hoffenheim

2.30pm UK time

Borussia Monchengladbach have slipped down to fourth in recent weeks after their sensational start to the 2019-20 campaign.

However they do sit just four points off league leaders Bayern with a game in hand.

They head into Saturday’s clash full of confidence following a 4-1 victory over Dusseldorf last time out.

Hoffenheim will be desperate to return to winning ways after two defeats in their last two games.

Currently in eighth place Alfred Schreuder’s side face a tough few weeks with Bayern to follow. Anything from Saturday’s match will be a big boost.

Freiburg vs Fortuna Dusseldorf

2.30pm UK time

The hosts may only have two wins from their last five, but it’s all to play for as Christian Streich’s side still find themselves firmly in European contention.

They sit in seventh place heading into this one, just four points adrift of fifth-spot Bayer Leverkusen.

Eight-goal top scorer Nils Petersen is set to return to the side after recently returning from injury but only starting the Augsburg stalemate on the bench.

In this reverse fixture Dusseldorf goalkeeper Zack Steffen saved a penalty, though will not feature this time due to injury. The Manchester City will be a big miss, after making the No 1 shirt his own.

Fortuna are desperately in need of a win, after falling into the relegation zone alongside Werder Bremen and Paderborn. Victory would take them within two points of 15th-placed Mainz.

Werder Bremen vs Borussia Dortmund

2.30pm UK time

Far from the ideal time for strugglers Werder to face Dortmund. The visitors arrive fresh off the back of a Champions League comeback victory over Paris Saint-Germain.

Things have been made worse as key midfielder Maximilian Eggestein is suspended and joins winter signing Kevin Vogt, among others, on the sidelines.

Former Dortmund man Nuri Sahin is set to come in, hopefully to save the day, and experience an emotional reunion with his old club.

Julian Brandt and skipper Marco Reus are still out for Dortmund, though new boy Emre Can is available.

American teenager Gio Reyna is pushing for his full debut after making Champions League history with his assist for Erling Haaland’s sensational winner in midweek.

Schalke vs RB Leipzig

5.30pm UK time; Live on BT Sport 3 and BT Sport Ultimate

All pressure is on Leipzig for this one, who know title rivals Bayern are expected to comfortably beat bottom-of-the-table Paderborn.

Schalke will rely on the firepower of Amine Harit, who brought to an end Julian Naglesmann’s unbeaten run as Leipzig coach earlier in the season.

The Morocco international has scored just twice since, however, and is now nine Bundesliga matches without a goal.

Seven-goal top scorer Suat Serdar should return after an ankle knock, while defender Ozan Kabak is also in line for a return.

Leipzig became the first team in 2019-20 to stop Bayern from scoring on their own patch a fortnight ago, and enter this one riding a wave of confidence after beating Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham during European duty in midweek.

Timo Werner is looking to continue his goalscoring run, while US international Tyler Adams is still out injured. Roma loanee Patrik Schick and Manchester City full back Angelino are set to keep their places in the side.

SUNDAY

Bayer Leverkusen v Augsburg

2.30pm UK time; Live on BT Sport 3

Bayer Leverkusen are back in domestic action on Sunday after an impressive 2-1 win over Porto in the Europa League on Thursday, with a Kai Havertz penalty proving decisive.

It is momentum that should serve them well in their battle to break into the top four of the Bundesliga – at present, they trail fourth-placed Monchengaldbach by two points and are still only six off top spot.

Augsburg, meanwhile, are down in 11th but held Freiburg to a 1-1 draw at home last weekend.

They have their safety all but secured, 10 points above the drop zone but have their work cut out to get something out of this weekend’s fixture.

Wolfsburg v Mainz

5pm UK time; Live on BT Sport 1

Sunday’s late kick-off pits ninth-placed Wolfsburg at home against a Mainz team who are looking to haul themselves away from the drop zone.

At present, they are five points clear after drawing against Schalke last week while the bottom three all lost. Another point against top-half opposition would be no bad result here.

Wolfsburg look to be returning to their best after a bit of a dip in form – they have won seven points from their last nine after losing three straight.

They are five points behind Schalke, who occupy sixth place and the final Bundesliga European qualifying spot, so a home victory here is imperative.

They head into the match having beaten Malmo 2-1 in the Europa League in midweek.

MONDAY

Eintracht Frankfurt v Union Berlin

7.30pm UK time; Live on BT Sport 1

Monday’s Bundesliga match sees two teams bidding to return to winning ways after defeats last weekend.

Eintracht Frankfurt were routed 4-0 in a ruthless display by Dortmund but already looked to have chanelled some of that killer instinct in their own play after Thursday’s eye-catching 4-1 win over RB Salzburg.

They sit 10th in the Bundesliga as it stands, only two places above Union Berlin, who will usurp them in the standings with a win on Monday.

Last week, they were defeated 3-2 by Bayer Leverkusen in dramatic circumstances. An 87th-minute goal from Maruis Butler looked to have salvaged a draw, only for Karim Bellarabi to score a 94th-minute winner.
