Napoli captain Lorenzo Insigne donates £90,000 to hospitals in Campania region of Italy to help fight coronavirus pandemic

Napoli captain Lorenzo Insigne has donated more than £90,000 to the hospitals in the Italian region of Campania to help against the coronavirus pandemic.

There have been more than 17,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Italy, and as a result Serie A fixtures have been suspended until at least April 3.

The second leg of Napoli’s last-16 Champions League tie against Barcelona has also been postponed by UEFA.

But Insigne, whose side sit sixth in the league, has been publicly thanked for his financial contribution off the field by the Governor of the southern Italian region, Vincenzo De Luca, in a live Facebook message.

De Luca said: ‘I would like to thank Lorenzo Insigne among the most active people in the city for helping the hospitals of Naples. 

‘He gave us 100 thousand euros (£90,000) to fight coronavirus and help hospitals.’ 

Insigne’s donation comes after he reminded all Napoli fans and his social media followers to stay at home to prevent the spread of the virus. 

The attacker sent a very clear message on his a video on Instagram, saying:  ‘I recommend you stay at home, we don’t go out so we all fight the Coronavirus together’.
