Sir Stirling Moss’s life will be celebrated in a patriotic send-off reflecting his love of Britain, his family have said.

News of the planned celebration came after the funeral of the motor racing legend, who died last Sunday aged 90, was held on Friday.

A statement read: ‘The family of Sir Stirling Moss would like to let his many friends and fans around the world know that a private funeral service has been conducted at Mortlake Crematorium in London. In attendance were Lady (Susie) Moss, their son Elliot, his daughter Allison and other close family members.

‘Sir Stirling’s family would like to make it clear that a proper celebration of his life will take place at a venue appropriate both to his love of Britain and his incomparable career, as soon as reasonably possible after current restrictions to travel and gatherings have been lifted.’

Sir Stirling was taken ill at the end of 2016 with a chest infection. He was cared for night and day by Lady Moss as he fought his long illness.

Lady Moss said: ‘Sir Stirling may have taken his final flag and the celebrations unavoidably delayed, but when the time comes we will ensure a send-off that befits a man admired and adored by so many for so long.’

Executives at Silverstone, home of the British Grand Prix, are considering ways to honour Moss’s contribution to British motor sport.
