The Government has been mocked for a bizarre tweet telling people to keep ‘three fridges apart’ as they attempt keep social distancing measures in place.
Boris Johnson revealed his road map towards easing lockdown restrictions through a five-point Covid-19 Alert system.
People are now allowed unlimited exercise and can meet up with one friend or family member from outside your household outdoors as long as they remain at least two metres apart.
But as sunbathers and tourists packing beaches and parks across the UK this week ahead of a bank holiday weekend, the government reminded the public to observe the two-metre rule in a confusing new message.
The tweet from the official Downing Street twitter account read: ‘Keep 2 metres apart when you go outside.
‘That’s 1 bed, 2 benches, 3 fridges, 4 chairs.”
People have taken to social media to share their reactions, some confused over the sizes of the object while others mocked the Prime Minister’s connection to the kitchen appliance.
Gilly Clarke, 23, from Manchester, wrote: ‘Gonna be a hard slog carrying 3 fridges to the park just to have a chat with my cousin.’
Twitter user Chressie Grech questioned the advice, saying: ‘3 industrial fridges or little ones? Can’t you be more specific?’.
David Llewellyn wrote: ‘Does anyone think of fridges in width? First thing I thought of was fridges laid end to end, which in the case of our fridge-freezer would be closer to five metres.
‘I don’t know who is responsible for your comms, but I’m beginning to think they might be an alien.’
Others were quick to make reference to the moment Boris Johnson was filmed entering a fridge to avoid being interviewed by a reporter during last year’s general election campaign.
It comes as Health Secretary Matt Hancock last night pleaded with people to stick to current restrictions which prohibit meeting more than one person from outside your household outdoors.
He said: ‘Let’s not go back to square one. We can all play our part in the national effort.’
But there are increasing signs that many have given up on lockdown measures, sparking growing fears of a potential second wave of the deadly disease.
New data published today suggests some people were bending the rules even before Boris Johnson set out his lockdown exit strategy on May 10.
Google footfall data showed the number of people visiting parks was above pre-lockdown levels in the days leading up to the Prime Minister’s address to the nation.
Meanwhile, the Office for National Statistics today revealed almost one in five adults are meeting up with friends or family from outside their household.
