Guess who? Academy Award winner posts flashback snap

He’s a New Zealand-born actor who took Hollywood by storm, eventually landing three Oscar nods and one win.

And taking to Instagram on Wednesday, Russell Crowe shared a black and white image in which he’s a foppish, trendy teen in cowboy boots, skinny jeans and an even skinnier tie.

The actor, who made his name in Australia before heading to Hollywood, amusingly captioned the throwback image: ‘Hahahaha #cringe’.

Cringe! The actor, who made his name in Australia before heading to Hollywood, amusingly captioned the throwback image: ‘Hahahaha #cringe’

The photo, which appears to have been taken in the late 1970s or 1980s when the star was in his teen years, shows him standing in the doorway of a dilapidated terrace house.

Grafitti on the wall names the popular New Zealand new wave rock band Mi-Sex, that was largely active from 1977 to 1986.

Further scrawls proclaim that ‘disco is dead’ a phrase popular in the late 1970s, indicating the image may date to that era.

The image could have been taken when Russell began his career as a musician in the early 1980s, performing under the stage name ‘Russ Le Roq’, under which he released three unsuccessful singles.

The Insider star turned to acting, moving to Australia and attending NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art) at the age of 21.

He soon made his name in Australia, starring in films like Proof, Romper Stomper, and The Sum of Us in the early 1990s.

Hollywood called, and the now-adopted Aussie became a household name after roles in films such as The Insider, Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind.

Those three films lead three Academy Award nominations, and one win, Best Actor for Gladiator in 2001.

Despite his fame however, over the weekend the star was refused entry from a Souths Juniors match at Mascot Oval because he had his blue heeler puppy, QueBlue, in tow.

The Sunday Telegraph reported the Gladiator star was ‘apparently’ not recognised by a female official at the dog-free ground and was politely told he could not enter with the animal.

However, it wasn’t all bad news for the footy fan, with a friend stepping in to mind the adorable pup while Russell watched the match.
