Giving the finger: Killer is sent a mummified human digit in the post – along with a chilling message
- The mummified finger was sent to convicted killer Thomas Stone in Goulburn
- The finger had been attached to a beaded necklace before being mailed
- It’s believed the finger belonged to a relative of Stone’s who had passed away
A mummified finger fashioned into a necklace was sent to a convicted killer.
The gruesome delivery was sent to Thomas Stone who is serving 23 years for the murder of his flatmate Robert James Mitchell.
Prison guards at the Goulburn Correctional Centre in New South Wales made the macabre discovery Stone’s cell on Wednesday, The Daily Telegraph reported.
The mummified finger had been drilled out so a bead necklace could be threaded through.
The grim gift came with a message on the envelope which urged Stone to ‘solve the mystery inside’.

Stone was convicted for the 2017 killing of Mr Mitchell, while they were both psychiatric patients at the Morisset Hospital.
Police have since identified the person the finger belonged to and believe it came from a now deceased relative of Stone.
They said the finger was removed from the person before they had passed away.
Police said they will need more DNA testing before confirming who the finger belongs to.
It’s believed the person who posted the finger had also sent mail to notorious serial killer Ivan Milat.
In 2009 Milat cut his own finger off with a razor blade and plastic knife in protest of his convictions which he called ‘wrongful’.
While it isn’t illegal to send a body part through the mail police said they would be investigating how the person came to posses the mummified finger.
Stone was jailed in 2019 after being found guilty of stabbing Mr Mitchell three times with a kitchen knife.
