Award-winning journalist Virginia Trioli accidentally called a young female guest a ‘rooter’ when introducing her on Q&A.
The 54-year-old stepped in for regular host Hamish Macdonald for Monday night’s episode, which featured former Labor leader Bill Shorten and singer Katie Noonan.
The program began with Trioli speaking to the camera as she discussed the COVID-19 efforts in Victoria and across Australia.
When introducing law student and writer Yasmin Poole as a panellist, Trioli intended to tell the audience she was a ‘writer’, but suffered the slip of the tongue instead.
‘Rooter’ is a colloquial Australian slang term used to describe someone having sexual intercourse.

Trioli quickly corrected herself, but the blunder didn’t go unnoticed.
Within seconds, Twitter was flooded with people mocking the unfortunate mix up.
‘Joining me on the panel tonight, rooter, um writer, youth advocate and law student Yasmin Poole, Paul Fletcher, joining us from Brisbane, Katie Noonan,’ Trioli said.
Ms Poole awkwardly smiled through the introduction.
‘The juvenile hysterics currently going on in our house is almost shameful. Almost,’ one viewer wrote on Twitter immediately after the slip up.
‘Everyone’s having a hard time wiping the smile off their faces with the “rooter” in their midst,’ another added.
The two-time Walkley award winner works as a presenter on Mornings on ABC Radio Melbourne and is the former co-host of ABC News Breakfast.
It is not clear why she filled in for Macdonald on Monday night.
