Bachelor host Osher blames driver for Brisbane cycle crash

Bachelor host and well-known cycling enthusiast Osher Gunsberg has taken to Instagram to post about the cycling accident

Bachelor host and well-known cycling enthusiast Osher Gunsberg has weighed in on the shocking crash that left five cyclists in the hospital on Friday.

‘Crikey Brisbane, watch out around bikes,’ the former Australian Idol host wrote on his Instagram, after the cyclists were seriously injured after being struck by a car in Brisbane.

‘Please give cyclists [one metre] space, please be patient and pass safely.’

He implores drivers to ‘please, please look out for cyclists’, as it was confirmed one woman has sustained significant head injuries.

Three have leg and arm injuries and will be taken to the Royal Brisbane and Woman’s Hospital.

Police are investigating the incident but could not confirm reports the car was doing a U-turn when it struck the cyclists.

‘This is what happens when drivers don’t obey the law,’ he wrote, as it was reported that the vehicle appeared to be trying to turn in at low speed as the cyclists were coming down a hill on Friday morning.

The driver, who remained at the scene, was breath-tested.

Osher wrote of the incident: ‘1 critically injured woman fighting for her life & 4 others injured’

‘One critically injured woman fighting for her life & 4 others injured after a car ploughed into 5 cyclists in this morning. Please, please check twice for bikes.’

He then went on to remind people that in QLD, cyclists can legally ride side by side, use the entire right-hand lane if they need to and ‘have a right not to be injured or killed’.

It was confirmed a short time later that the cyclists, all aged between 45 and 55, have been taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital with ‘assorted injuries’.

Osher advises car drivers to ‘wait ten seconds…take a breath’ and to only cross a solid line to overtake a cyclist when it is safe to do so.

The cyclists  were travelling along Dornoch Terrace in Highgate Hill when the incident occurred about 6.20am.

The collision allegedly occurred because the driver didn’t see the cyclists, three of whom were hit by the vehicle while two others went over it, according to Sunrise.

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said earlier that two patients have possible head injuries and will be taken to hospital.
