Dog sled champion races Land Rover Discovery Sport

This is the moment a dog sled champion raced a brand new Land Rover Discovery Sport in an underground ice tunnel.

The team of six huskies, headed up by medalist Laura Kaarainen, took on the four-wheel drive for a promotional video.

The Land Rover Discovery Sport is one of the UK’s most successful cars in recent times, with 75,000 models already sold this year.

To demonstrate its capability on snow, the British firm took a Disco Sport to Finland to compete against a team of huskies.

Laura Kääriäinen and her six sled dogs, which were in need of training ahead of the winter championships, competed against the car at the Vesileppis Ski Tunnel.

Setting off in opposite directions, they had to negotiate the first incline where they reached a speed of around 22mph.

The Discovery Sport’s initial path was blocked by a set of ice blocks, putting its wheel articulation and traction control systems to the test on the underground tunnel.

It was neck-and-neck in the 1km race, but horsepower eventually beat dogpower as the Disco Sport passed the finish line first by a hair’s breadth.

Driver Karl Richards, a lead engineer at Jaguar Land Rover, said: ‘Snow is one of the most demanding surfaces drivers will encounter during winter around the world and Discovery Sport proved to be as comfortable in these conditions as the dogs.

The clip begins with the statement reading: ‘Filmed on a closed road with professional drivers. No animals were harmed during the making of this film.’

As dramatic music plays in the background, there are shots of the huskies then the camera pans overhead to show the Range Rover travelling in Lempyy, Finland to the dog sled training camp.

The car is then seen driving over a bridge in the Finnish countryside as it makes its way to the venue of the race.

The Vesileppis Tunnel, buried 35m underground has a temperature of -2C and has a 1km-long snow-covered race track.

As the metallic grey car pulls up, Jaguar engineer Karl Richards gets out and comes head to head with Laura.

Onscreen flashes: ‘Horsepower v dog power. Can the Discovery Sport beat a champion dog sled team on snow?’

There are lingering shots of the car interspersed with footage of the two competitors as they prepare to go up against one another.

The dogs can be seen barking in excitement while Karl coolly presses ‘start’ on the dashboard.

Selecting the ‘snow mode’ programme, the Discovery Sport bursts into action as the two teams race in opposite directions.

The sports car, worth around £47,000, meets an obstacle course which slows it down while the huskies race ahead confidently.

But as they come around the corner for the final stretch, the high-powered car pips them to the post.

Laura, who lost out by seconds, described it as a ‘unique experience’.
