Clive Tyldesley signed by American CBS Sports to lead Champions League coverage with Jamie Carragher after legendary commentator was replaced as number one broadcaster at ITV by Sam Matterface

  • Clive Tyldesley has been signed to lead CBS’s Champions League coverage
  • The veteran commentator was replaced by Sam Matterface as ITV’s No 1
  • Tyldesley will be joined by Jamie Carragher in leading the American coverage
  • Sky Sports gave Carragher the green light to appear for the broadcaster

Clive Tyldesley has been signed by Americans CBS Sports to lead their Champions League commentary – along with Jamie Carragher.

The ITV man hit the headlines when he was replaced as number one commentator at the broadcaster earlier this month by Sam Matterface. A self-made video, in which he spoke of his upset over the move, was viewed almost 10 million times and clearly made an impression on the other side of the Atlantic.

Carragher has both been permitted by current employers Sky Sports to also work for CBS.

The move may come as a surprise given Sky are owned by CBS’s fellow Americans Comcast, although there is no conflict as Sky do not hold the rights for the competition. CBS are also keen on bringing in fellow pundit Gary Neville, with talks said to be ongoing.

Sources have disclosed that CBS are now taking their coverage seriously. Earlier this month, Sports Agenda reported how their chief soccer analyst Thomas Rongen lived up to his name when claiming during the Champions League draw coverage that Atalanta had struggled since the restart of Serie A.

They had, in fact, won all six of their matches.
