Atletico Madrid are waiting nervously to see who can travel to Lisbon for their Champions League quarter-final against RB Leipzig following their coronavirus scare.

The Spanish club announced yesterday that two unnamed players had tested positive for COVID-19, meaning they will be unavailable for the last-eight tie on Thursday due to UEFA virus protocols.

The next round of coronavirus test results for the squad is due today, with the La Liga club fearing that other players may be infected which could deplete their squad massively for the all-important clash in Portugal.

UEFA protocols state that anyone who has tested positive for coronavirus is not allowed to travel to Champions League matches.

Diego Simeone’s squad were due to fly at around 8pm local time on Monday night, but the coronavirus scare means their travel plans are likely to change.

Atletico have not identified which players have tested positive for the virus, though they will now quarantine away from the squad and will not be joining the flight to Lisbon.

An Atleti statement read yesterday: ‘Among the results known today, two positives have appeared, which are isolated in their respective homes, and which were immediately communicated to the Spanish and Portuguese health authorities, UEFA, the Royal Spanish Football Federation, the Portuguese Federation and the Higher Sports Council.’
