The film marks the first time Katherine has appeared on the big screen, where she takes on the role of Millie and Bill as Robert Hayes in the drama directed by Andrew Levitas.

In the film, Johnny plays war photographer W.Eugene Smith who travels to Japan to document the devastating effects of mercury poisoning in coastal communities in the 1970s.

This biopic begins in the 1950s, long past his ‘glory days,’ with Smith’s Life Magazine editor Ralph Graves convincing him to investigate the widespread mercury poisoning in the coastal town of Minamata, Japan.

The film will follow Smith some thirty years after his photographic account of the US offensive against Japan during World War II, notably the Battle of Okinawa, earned him a reputation as one of the most significant photojournalist’s of his generation.

With the war long since over Smith has become increasingly reclusive, but a commission from Life magazine tempts him back to the far east, where he draws attention to the plight of a humble fishing community decimated by mercury poisoning.

Gaining their trust, the photographer endeavours to bring their story to the world’s attention, and by doing so begins a lengthy quest for justice against the corporations responsible for causing the disaster.

The fallout resulted in victims receiving some of the biggest financial payouts of all time, and director Levitas – who was given the support of victims and their families prior to filming – admits he feels honoured to be bringing their story to the big screen.

‘I am thrilled to be working with such a talented and dedicated team on the story behind one of the most devastating and relatively unknown catastrophes of the past 100 years,’ he said.

‘Told through the eyes of the extraordinary W. Eugene Smith, widely regarded as one of the most passionate, ground-breaking and uncompromising photojournalists of the 20th century.

‘In his bid to bring the world’s attention to atrocities including the bloodiest conflict in human history, World War II and the horrors of Minamata he put his own life at risk to bring the truth out in his work and capture some of the most poignant images ever taken.

‘Every one of the cast and crew is determined to make the people of Minamata’s voices heard as we begin shooting this film.’

Katherine’s appearance comes after she was unveiled to be Octopus during The Masked Singer finale on Saturday night.

Katherine disguised as Octopus finished in third place, after she delivered a stunning rendition of Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious from the Disney classic Mary Poppins.

Discussing her time on the show Katherine said: ‘It’s been so fun. You know, in my normal career it can be quite serious and quite static.

‘So to be able to do something where you can just literally create a new character; sing songs you would never in a million years sing – it’s been really, really fun.’

Berlin Film Festival runs until Sunday 1 March.
