Fire rips through Braintree industrial estate in Essex

A huge fire has destroyed two buildings on an industrial estate in Essex as residents have been warned to stay indoors.  

The blaze started just after 5am this morning in Braintree with nine crews called to the scene. 

The gigantic warehouses were engulfed with flames as concerned officials told neighbours to stay indoors due to the quantity of the smoke.

Residents in Braintree are being advised to close their windows and doors due to the sheer amount of smoke

Huge clouds of thick black smoke filled the air with firefighters taking six hours to get the blaze under contorl.  

Nine fire crews in total were called including, two from Braintree, two from Chelmsford, one from Great Dunmow, one from Coggeshall and one from Colchester. 

The blaze so far has ‘completely destroyed’ two units at the warehouse complex with firefighters managing to stop it spreading to nearby sites.  

The industrial unit, which measures around 80 metres by 30m, was completely up in flames when crews arrived this morning

An investigation will be carried out in to the cause of the fire, a spokesman for the service said.

One of the destroyed units was used as a kitchen and furniture warehouse, the other was used to store vehicles.

Residents living nearby were advised to keep their windows and doors shut.

Incident Commander Mark Samuels said: ‘Firefighters have worked extremely hard to stop this fire from spreading to the other two businesses in this large industrial unit.

‘Unfortunately two units have been completely destroyed but we were able to save the other two units.’
