‘Caring’ cyclist, 18, killed in Salford crash with lorry

Friends have raised over £400 for the funeral of an 18-year-old cyclist who died after colliding with a lorry that narrowly missed ploughing into a shop front.

It took fire crews almost an hour to free the cyclist, named locally as Olivia Wojciechowska, from the crash in Salford on Friday.

She died on Saturday despite being rushed to hospital and in the hours that followed scores of people took to social media to share tributes to the Eccles restaurant worker.

Elliemay Barnes wrote on Facebook: ‘I really can’t believe what I am hearing. Such a beautiful and caring girl taken far too soon. Feels like yesterday we was sat in college moaning to finish! I will never forget the memories we shared fly high beautiful, I’ll never forget you.’

Alysha Connor wrote: ‘Rest in peace Olivia. Such a lovely girl thoughts are with your friends and family.’

And Zaniar Shafiee added: ‘It was too soon for you to go Olivia. R.I.P we’ll all miss you, fly high with the angels.’

More than £400 has been raised to help towards funeral costs via an online crowdfunding website.

It was set up by Annette Harrison, who hopes to raise £1,000.

Annette wrote on the page: ‘Olivia was a young girl who has recently turned 18. She was on her way home on her bicycle when she was hit by a HGV in Salford on Friday 1st September.

‘Although the hospital staff did everything for her, she sadly passed away on Saturday morning. The money raised is to help towards her funeral expenses.’

Collision investigators are now appealing to the public for information about the Eccles Old Road crash.

Sergeant Brian Orr, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: ‘This is a tragic set of circumstances that have sadly taken the life of a woman and our thoughts are with her family at this incredibly difficult time.

‘It happened at a busy time of day when people may have been around and I would like to appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time that may have witnesses this collision to contact us.

‘We are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have dashcam footage of the incident.’
