Rolls-Royce-led consortium strikes deal with Central Europe’s biggest utility group to work on plans for a fleet of mini-nuclear reactors
A Rolls-Royce-led consortium has struck a deal with Central Europe’s biggest utility group to work on plans for a fleet of mini-nuclear reactors.
Prague-based CEZ is keen to assess if it could roll out a fleet of the consortium’s reactors in the Czech Republic.
The ‘rapid assembly’ power stations would be manufactured in sections and are about 1.5 acres in size – about one-sixteenth of the size of a normal station.
Plans: The Rolls-Royce-led group, which also includes Laing O’Rourke and the National Nuclear Laboratory, wants to build 16 small nuclear reactors across the UK
CEZ boss Daniel Benes said the company had been focusing on small modular reactors ‘for quite some time now’.
Benes said: ‘In the future, they can be an important alternative that we cannot ignore.’
They would be quicker and cheaper to build than typical nuclear plants.
