Student ‘raped by Indian guru in a ‘cleansing procedure’

  • Woman from Delhi complained she had been raped since age of 13 by cult leader
  • The 24-year-old said her mother had invited ‘guru’ to perform ‘holy cleansing’
  • Her mother later blackmailed her by warning no one would marry her knowing she had been raped, she claimed

A student has claimed her mother blackmailed her into being ‘repeatedly raped by an Indian cult leader’ as part of a ‘cleansing procedure’.

The 24-year-old, from India’s capital Delhi, claimed that she had been sexually abused since the age of 13 by the self-anointed guru.

Her mother invited the cult leader to perform a ‘holy cleansing’, but instead he raped her in a room, the woman alleged.

The business studies post graduate student, currently attending a course in the city of Bengalaru, said in a police complaint: ‘He took me to a room in our house and raped me, saying that without it, the cleansing procedure would not be complete.

‘I told my mother everything but she refused to accept it. She kept calling the baba (guru), who kept raping me.’

According to The New Indian Express, her mother blackmailed her by insisting no one would marry her if they knew she had been raped.

She also warned that telling her frail father would make his condition even worse – and could even lead to his death, the newspaper reports.

The alleged victim eventually told her father who convinced her to return before she made a complaint.

IBTimes reports a police officer in the case as saying: ‘Usually, complainants refuse to give statements in front of a magistrate when they level frivolous allegations over petty family issues.

‘In this case, the victim willingly gave a statement and told us the sequence of events.’

The guru is yet to be arrested following the complaint and the woman’s mother has tried to claim that the 24-year-old is using drugs. However, no traces of drugs have been found in her body, the officer said.
