Chelsea star Timo Werner misses a SITTER for second match in a row as German striker blazes over from a few yards out while completely unmarked against Rennes in Champions League, to leave Peter Crouch wondering: ‘How has he not scored this?!’

  • The German forward fired over from a couple of yards out when unmarked
  • 24-year-old Werner also missed an easy chance at Newcastle over the weekend

Timo Werner missed a sitter for the second consecutive Chelsea game in a row in the Blues’ Champions League tie against Rennes on Tuesday night.

In the opening exchanges of the game, the German striker fired miles over the bar from inside the six-yard box when completely unmarked after Callum Hudson-Odoi had put a brilliant cross into the penalty area.

The striker was criticised by BT Sport pundit Peter Crouch over the miss, with the ex-England striker praising the ball in from Hudson-Odoi.

Crouch said on Tuesday night: ‘Werner, how has he not scored this? A fantastic ball from the right hand side. He has to score there.’

The chance follows Werner’s stunning miss against Newcastle on the weekend, when he picked up a pass from Tammy Abraham in the box but slotted wide under no pressure at St James’ Park.

Thankfully for Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, the Blues picked up a 2-0 win against the Magpies over the weekend, with Werner making a brilliant assist for Abraham for the Blues’ second goal.

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount revealed last week that the 24-year-old needs to be stricter on his finishing as Lampard’s side look to him for goalscoring inspiration.

England midfielder Mount told the official Chelsea website: ‘I said to Timo in the first half, “that’s a goal for you, you need to score them” because I’ve seen them go in day-in and day-out in training.

‘He’s a top player and he needs to be harsh on himself to score those. He knows that and, if it comes next week, he’ll put it away.’

Werner has been Chelsea’s top scorer this season with eight goals in 13 matches in all competitions for the west Londoners.

The striker was a marquee signing for Lampard’s Blues over the summer having arrived from German side RB Leipzig for £47.5million.

Werner had a prolific record in Germany, netting 95 times in 153 games for Leipzig with 34 of them coming last season alone.
