This is the heroic moment a bystander leaps into floodwater to save a woman who fell during a botched rescue attempt.

The car being driven by a young couple was trapped in a raging torrent on Sunday afternoon after heavy rains lashed Dehradun, India.

Residents used a tree branch and a make-shift platform to reach the paid but as the woman walked across she fell into the water.

A quick-thinking onlooker then bravely jumped into the filthy water to grab her moments before she was swept away.

Resident Srihari Lal said the road flooded every rainy season and posed a sever danger to motorists.

He said: ”We have been asking for a bridge for the last many years but the administration has not responded so far.”

The male driver of the car was later rescued and told residents that he had been driving along the road when a flash flood hit.

Flood waters washed the car back but luckily it hit an obstacle in the road which prevented it from being swept further away.
