Taylor Swift fans believe her song Dorothea is about her friendship with Selena Gomez

Taylor Swift has sparked speculation her song Dorothea on her new album Evermore is about none other than Selena Gomez.

The internet has been frantically speculating the meaning behind the lyrics on Taylor’s new surprise album which she released on December 11. 

The singer’s most ardent fans have taken a special interest in Dorothea with one user starting a social media thread about how it is likely about Selena.

The user @kbyerevival came up with a variety of covincing theories which many fans agreed with.

Among them was that ‘Dorothea’ was a reference to Selena’s favourite movie being The Wizard of Oz, while ‘Dorothy’ was also the name of a character she played in The Fundamentals of Caring.   

Several fans agreed with another guess that the lyrics ‘You got shiny friends since you left town’ is a reference to the celebrity pals Selena has made since she moved to Hollywood from her hometown in Texas.  

Taylor also describes Dorothea as ‘a queen selling dreams, makeup and magazines’, a possible reference to Selena’s new Rare Beauty makeup range as well as the myriad of magazine covers she has graced over the years.

Fans also thought the line ‘a tiny screen’s the only place I see you now’ referenced how the pair could only communicate over FaceTime during lockdown.

Taylor sings about ‘mom and her pageant schemes’ on the track, potentially referencing the pageants Selena took part in as a child.  

Other fans disagreed with the theories put forth and don’t think the song is about Selena at all.

One user wrote: ‘Dorothea is linked to ‘Tis the damn season and it’s about a couple that broke up because she go away chasing her dreams (like she said in fifteen) 

‘So she became famous and he only see her in tv, magazines, etc. It is totally not about Selena’. 

The singer has previously noted that Evermore and its sister album Folklore blend fact and fiction so its also possible the song could be about a fictional character.

In a letter to her fans, Taylor said the song is about: ‘Dorothea, the girl who left her small town to chase down Hollywood dreams—and what happens when she comes back for the holidays and rediscovers an old flame’.  

Evermore has been a hit with critics who called her second record of 2020 a quarantine ‘bubble we may not want to pop’ that is ‘full of unexpected experiments’ and ‘ambitious story songs’. 

She described the 15-track album as a ‘sister record’ to Folklore, which she produced entirely during the Covid-19 lockdowns and released unexpectedly in July.

Writing about the album on Instagram, Taylor penned: ‘I loved the escapism I found in these imaginary/not imaginary tales. 

‘I loved the ways you welcomed the dreamscapes and tragedies and epic tales of love lost and found into your lives. So I just kept writing them.

She added: ‘I also know this holiday season will be a lonely one for most of us and if there are any of you out there who turn to music to cope with missing loved ones the way I do, this is for you.’
