Horrified witnesses reported hearing a ‘massive explosion’ before seeing a fireball as a light aircraft crashed on landing this evening.

Emergency services raced to the scene of the disaster at Caernarfon Airport in Wales shortly after 6.20pm, and a cordon remains in place.

An onlooker claims the aircraft had ‘no landing gear on’ and hit the ground before ‘bouncing up’ again then exploding.

Pictures from the scene show smoke rising from the ground, following the crash at 6.20pm

Firefighters, the North Wales Police and Welshpool air ambulance are still at the scene.

The airport at Dinas Dinlle, near Caernarfon, is home to the Wales Air Ambulance and Rescue 936 Coastguard helicopter, along with other light aircraft.

A dog walker at the scene told The Daily Post:  ‘The first thing I noticed was that the plane had no landing gear on.

‘And then I realised it was going too fast. It came in and hit the tarmac and loads of debris came off it, it was a sort of belly flop and it bounced up.

‘It had caught fire straight away. When it hit the ground again it exploded.’

Another witness said: ‘There was a very loud boom and a massive fireball.’

North Wales Police wrote on Twitter: ‘Officers are currently dealing with an incident at Caernarfon Airport with colleagues from Ambulance & Fire. More details as we get it.’
