According to a press conference, NYPD Chief of Department Carlos Gomez said officers repeatedly asked the man to drop his knife.

When they noticed the object in his right hand, Gomez said: ‘The officers asked the male if the gun was real and ordered him to drop it, explaining and adding, “We don’t want to hurt you”.’
