An NHS doctor has gone viral on social media after posting a video which revealed insects are often found in pre-ground coffee beans.
Dr Karan Raj, who lives in the UK, explained that ground coffee often includes a percentage of cockroaches and other creatures in its ingredients – and should be avoided by those with allergies.
Boasting over 3 million followers on TikTok, the expert quickly racked up a flood of comments from thousands of people ‘terrified’ by the revelation – while others insisted it wouldn’t stop them from getting their daily coffee fix.
Dr Karan Raj reassured his social media followers that it’s safe to consume the insects, adding: ‘Just so you know if you drink coffee, you’re also consuming cockroaches.

‘Pre-ground coffee like you get in most stores contains a certain amount of cockroaches. Certain percentage of coffee beans becomes infected with cockroaches and other insects.
‘Usually they can’t be processed out completely. So they just get roasted and ground up with the coffee beans.
‘Most food authorities allow a certain percentage of bug parts in our food. Cockroaches are high in protein.
‘If you’re allergic to cockroaches, I’d stay away from pre-ground coffee.’

The NHS doctor went on to say that those who work in coffee processing often become allergic to cockroaches
He went on to add: ‘Some people who work in coffee processing often become allergic to cockroaches as a result of constantly handling the beans.’
The post garnered over 148,000 likes, but many joked it had ‘ruined’ their life and put them off drinking coffee.
One person wrote: ‘You’re telling me I have been drinking the very thing I am terrified of my entire life!??’
‘Okay dude some information you do not need to tell us, we are all coffee drinkers how dare you ruin our coffee in the morning,’ another commented.

A flood of comments admitted the fact has discouraged them from drinking coffee in the future
However, others admitted they won’t stop drinking coffee, with one saying: ‘Never knew cockroaches tasted good.’
A second commented: ‘Nothing wrong with a little extra protein in your coffee,’ while a third added: ‘And they are tasty little buggies. I’m not giving up coffee.’
A further penned: ‘Wonder if that vegan teacher drinks pre-ground coffee,’ while another wrote: ‘Me, watching this literally with a cup of coffee in my hand like.’
