Most Woolworths self-serve checkouts have been restored after an outage affecting stores nationwide led to customers waiting in lines for half an hour to buy groceries.
Frustrated Australian shoppers discovered they would need to line up to have their goods scanned by supermarket staff after an IT glitch stopped them from self-serving for hours on Wednesday afternoon.
Woolworths has apologised for the blackout and said the matter is expected to be resolved before Thursday.

‘The majority of our self-serve checkouts have returned to normal operation nationwide, with the rest expected to follow later this evening after they were affected by an IT issue,’ Woolworths tweeted.
‘We apologise for the inconvenience and thank our customers for their patience as we worked to fix this.’
Customers at the store in Town Hall, Sydney, were allegedly notified of the outage over loudspeaker at around 5pm on Wednesday.
The Daily Mail Australia spoke to stores in New South Wales and Western Australia who confirmed their self-serve systems were down too.

One social media user told a community Facebook group in Queanbeyan, New South Wales, there were ‘lines for miles’ outside one store.
‘Don’t go to Woolworths,’ they wrote.
‘Self serve not working, bugger all register staff lines for miles. Complete [chaos].’
Wait times at Caboolture South Woolworths in Moreton Bay, Queensland, were more than 30 minutes long, reported local Facebook page Moreton Alerts.
‘Please be patient staff don’t need to be abused over this,’ the alert said.
‘We have been advised that this is a state issue and is also affecting Big W stores as well.’
