  • The song titled ‘Young Champ’ and performed in Dutch received a mix reaction

Ryan Babel may be in the autumn of his playing career but the former Liverpool winger looks like he has already turned towards the music business after releasing his own song.

The 34-year-old Galatasaray star has released a rap song called ‘Young Champ’ which is backed by a slickly produced music video posted on his YouTube channel on Friday.

Although the Holland international is the performing artist, he only features in the intro before the song starts in the music video.

Instead, another musical artist in Selma Omari lip syncs along to the lyrics, which are almost entirely in Dutch, during the clip which is three minutes and 46 seconds long.

The description for the song on YouTube reads: ‘Ryan decided to not be the main character of his own music video and instead asked artist and model Selma Omari to claim the spotlight.

‘Known for her tracks “Het Spijt Me Niet” and “Lose My Mind”, Selma takes on the role of a true young champ in the video.

There are a few football references in the video with the most obvious being an Ajax shirt thrown into the air, with Babel having played for the club three times during his career

‘Ryan does not aim to position himself as a rapper but wishes to tell his story through music, a choice which the music video very much aligns with.’

There was a mixed reaction on social media to the clip, with fans on Twitter claiming that the forward was better off sticking to football.

The fan said: ‘Ryan, better focus on football rather than music. We got you, you are talented with music and YouTube but your main purpose should be football. How long have you been in Galatasaray?’

Babel, who has previously also featured in three spells at Ajax as well as Fulham, has struggled for goals this term, finding the net just four times across 29 games in all competitions for Galatasaray.

He has failed to find the net in his last 11 appearances although many of these have been late cameo substitutions in matches.

One critic though on Twitter was more frustrated with his goal return rather than his new record, bluntly stating: ‘It’s been a great job congratulations but score a goal.’

Over on YouTube though comments were much more welcoming with one Galatasaray fan saying the song should played at the club’s home ground if they manage to eclipse the six-point gap to current league leaders Besiktas come the end of the season.

‘Make us champions, let’s bring a campaign to sing this song live in the stadium.’

Another supporter admitted they couldn’t understand the Dutch lyrics but that the song still sounded good.

They said: ‘Didn’t understand anything but sounds great. And nice flow!’
