When it comes time to decide what you are doing after high school, one of the obvious choices is to enrol at a university. That is what is expected; it is what our parents did. But what if you don’t know in what area you would like to specialize. What if you choose the wrong major of specialization?

These are legitimate concerns. Many people end up doing different things after university than what they trained for. But that in no way means that their university experience was unnecessary. No matter what field of study you choose, you will come out the other side richer than when you went in (figuratively, not literally).

And if you genuinely can’t decide, then a Bachelor of Arts degree is the place to start.

Master Your Skills: While you are still discovering where your passions will fall. Your post-secondary years are the perfect time to develop skills that will take you to the next level. In high school, you learned a lot of basics in writing, research, science, and studying.

While earning a bachelor of arts degree, you learn how to take those skills to a place of power, where you can get meaningful results for yourself and others. Life is full of opportunities, but if you haven’t mastered the skills to research, plan, and calculate, you will miss out on many of them.

Diligence and Excellence: Even if you decide to work for yourself, the struggle of getting a degree, and the skills you learned along the way, will pay dividends the rest of your life. Learning how to do things to a professional standard will help you in business, and it will help you develop strategies for success.

Discover What is Out There: High school graduates have trouble choosing a path because they lack experience. It is hard to have an opinion on something if you don’t understand the subject. In an arts program, you will have great latitude to try many things and get a taste of what they are all about.

Become Employable: One of the first things an employer looks for when looking at job applications is the education level. Having a degree puts a person a level up on the competition, regardless of what you chose to study. Employers recognize that anyone who can commit to getting a degree has proven a level of commitment and determination. In other words, you have proof of character and intelligence.

Start a Network: The time you spend in university is also valuable for the people it brings into your life. University is the place you are going to meet all the future successful people in your life. And if you are a good judge of character, you will build a network of achievers and people with unique skills that you can access in later years.

A humanities or arts degree is the most versatile option for post-secondary education. You can use it as a jumping-off point for almost any area of study, and it provides skills that are the most applicable to professional life. There is plenty of time to specialize once you know yourself better.
