Watching Jeremy Clarkson on television could make life easier for the nation’s insomniacs, new research suggests.

Almost two-thirds (63 per cent) of viewers of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? admit they have nodded off during an episode.

The Great British Bake Off was in second place (61 per cent), with the BBC’s Newsnight in third (56 per cent).

The top five snooze views were completed by reruns of vintage game show Bullseye (55 per cent) and BBC Two’s Gardeners’ World (54 per cent).

Three of Britain’s longest-running and best-loved soaps – EastEnders, Emmerdale and Coronation Street – also featured in the top ten, along with the Antiques Roadshow and Midsomer Murders.

Further down the list came Clarkson’s former show Top Gear (22 per cent) which shared 13th place with animated sitcom Family Guy.

Meanwhile, the study found that Strictly Come Dancing, presented by Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly, is the show least likely to send viewers to sleep. Just seven per cent said they have dozed off while watching it. After selecting 16 of the most popular shows across a range of time slots from afternoon through early and late evening, researchers from BuzzBingo.com asked 2,000 adults which ones were most likely to have them slumbering.

Spokesman David Abrams said: ‘We were shocked when we found Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? turned out to be a snooze-fest. We thought Jeremy Clarkson would have had viewers on the edge of their seat, but it seems to be just the opposite.

‘At least Strictly has still got the nation gripped.’
