Millionaire cleared of assaulting his estranged wife

A millionaire has been cleared of assaulting his estranged wife at their £1.8million mansion after a 1am row about their eldest child’s private education.

Property mogul Mohammed Majid, 53, was roused by 45-year old spouse Shazia roused him who wanted to ask if their son could go to a different school.

The warring couple, who appear to have been sleeping in different bedrooms and had not spoken for three months, then had up to five hours of debate until 6am.

A furious argument broke out in which Mr Majid was accused of grabbing his wife by the ankle as she sat on a sofa and then dragged her to the floor.

Police were called to the detached gated property in Bowdon, near Altrincham, Cheshire.

She was said to have told her husband: ‘I will get you locked up for 20 years.’  He was later arrested at his office

Details of the argument emerged at Manchester Magistrates Court where Majid – who runs a property firm in Manchester – stood trial charged with assault by beating but cleared because of his wife’s ‘inconsistent evidence’.

He admitted a row took place but was cleared of wrongdoing. He has now moved to a £700,000 home nearby and the pair are in the process of divorcing.

The court heard the feuding couple whose neighbours include England cricket star Jimmy Anderson had been married for 14 years and have two children aged two and seven.

But several years ago their marriage became strained and they started living at separate ends of their six bedroom property. They even refused to speak to each other for three months despite living under the same roof.

The row erupted on February 19 this year when Mrs Majid became concerned about her eldest being unhappy at the junior section of prestigious Manchester Grammar School where fees are £12,270 a year.

Mrs Majid told the hearing: ‘My husband was ignoring and not giving me answers, I was mostly speaking but he wasn’t listening. We were chatting for a few hours and at about 6am he said: “Get out of my room” but I said that it was my room as much as his and refused to leave.

‘That is when he became violent and said: “Let me show you what I can do to you” and he began dragging me with one hand on my buttock.

‘He dragged me across the bed and I was trying to resist but he was very strong so I couldn’t do anything. He grabbed my right wrist and twisted it hard and pushed me around the bed room, holding my neck and with full force he threw me out of the door.

‘When he found out the police were coming he ran out of the house and went got in his car. I told the police what had happened but I was not in a state to give a statement at that time.

‘I went to the doctors for swelling on my wrist and and I had seven bruises on my body. I took painkillers for three days.’

Ms Majid showed photos to the court which showed bruising to her right buttock, on her upper arm and swelling and three bruises on her wrist.

Her estranged husband accepted an argument took place but insisted there was no assault.

Mr Majid said: ‘She was ranting and screaming at me saying I had ruined her life and our son’s lives.

‘At that point it was getting too much for me so I got out of bed and went to go and sleep in another room. She followed me out of the room so tried to quickly turn around to go back into my bedroom and locked the door.

‘When I turned around she tried to grab my collar but I was a bit too quick for her and I managed to get back into the bedroom and lock the door. She was banging and kicking at the door and hurling abuse at me.

‘About 6am she went away and came back around two hours later and I opened the door because I realised the children would be up and I didn’t want to create a scene. She came into the room and I said I had, had enough and was going to file for divorce and get custody of the two children. She said she was going to call the police and have me locked up for 20 years for abusing me.

‘I said she could call the police as I had done nothing wrong. I left the house and went to the gym about 11.30 and then I drove to the office. We lived together in the same house until the following month. The next day I went to see a solicitor.’

A police officer who saw Mrs Majid said she ‘seemed upset’ and he noted bruises to her wrist area and upper arm.

But returning a not guilty verdict, JP Dianne Webb- Hobson said: ‘Whilst the main facts are not in dispute and a conversation did take place, we found Ms Majid’s evidence inconsistent and Mr Majid’s consistent.’
