The pumpkin spice latte (PSL) was first tested at select Starbucks locations in January 2003 and quickly saw shocking success as the drink sky-rocketed into a seasonal staple and one of the coffee chain’s most popular products.
The drink progressed from a treat into a nearly religious trend with fans clamoring for more products with the autumnal nutmeg and cinnamon flavor and businesses responded with pumpkin spice flavored snacks, clothing, and even lipstick shades. And now one designer has turned the ‘basic’ trend into couture.
Designer Betsey Johnson has long been notorious for her crazy designs and fun-spirited prints, and she just released a pumpkin spice purse that is a spitting replica of the famed Starbucks drink.
Designer PSL: Fashion designer Betsey Johnson just revamped the famed fall Starbucks drink into a couture purse that even matches the height of a conventional venti drink
On point: The purse replaced normal coffee detail boxes with cheeky and playful phrases
Basic requirement: The bag displays the words ‘pumpkin spice latte’ and other details such as ‘sugar, spice and everything nice’ and even parodies barista name-spelling mistakes
One Instagram user Emilee Christine took to Instagram to flaunt her designer purse, which retails for $78 as a part of the designer’s latest eccentric fall collection.
And the purse is an uncanny replica of the hot drink and even matches the height of a venti Starbucks beverage, which Emilee posed side by side for her proud flick.
The all white leather purse takes a conventional latte’s cylinder shape and features a gold zipper wrapped around the lid. Curvy festive font spells ‘pumpkin spice latte’ where a barista typically writes the order. Three yellow and orange pumpkins sit at the bottom of the of the purse art and gold leaves csacade along the purse’s entire exterior for a very season- appropriate bag.
PSL please! Fall is notorious for the spark of fever for the famed drink that debuted in 2003 and quickly became the most famous coffee house drink and has now been reinvented into a purse
Wear your passion: Betsey Johnson’s designs span bags that take the shop of quirky objects ranging from a stack of pancakes to roller skates
Boo! The latest collection, includes the PSL purse as well as other Halloween-themed items like a glittering black bat and a blushing pumpkin
On the bag of the back, in true Starbucks fashion, lies three attempts to write ‘Betsey’ correctly and humorously includes the slip-up scratch outs. Further along the cup the designer included the typical coffee check boxes that usually detail drink preferences and instead are replaced with the phrase: ‘Sugar, spice and everything nice.’
Along the bottom lies a quiet disclaimer, ‘Warning, caution, hot, basic.’ And at the top of the bag, right where the lid opens there’s a fitting lipstick blot that any diva would recognize from beverage sipping while donning a colorful pout.
Emilee was ecstatic with wearable version of her favorite drink and captioned her photo, ‘Hi, yes, I’ll take a pumpkin spice latte to go with my pumpkin spice purse,’ and revealed that her mom was the one who first found the bag and purchased it.
While the PSL purse might fulfill any ‘basic’ girl’s dreams, it’s just a glimpse at the eccentric range of the designer’s fall bags, which come in unique shapes such as a bat, roller skates, a pumpkin and a vintage camera.
