‘I love Gini but this is NOT right’: Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher hits back at Georginio Wijnaldum after he admitted he didn’t feel ‘loved and appreciated’ at Anfield… as former defender insists new PSG star ‘wanted more money but the club said no’

Jamie Carragher has hit out at Gini Wijnaldum over comments the midfielder made about his departure from Liverpool this summer.
The 30-year-old’s contract at Anfield expired at the end of June, and though he was heavily linked with a move to Barcelona he ultimately decided to join Mauricio Pochettino’s Paris Saint-Germain side.
Speaking on the circumstances surrounding his Liverpool exit, Wijnaldum criticised both those at the club and fans on social media for what he felt was unfair treatment.

The Dutchman left Anfield on a free transfer earlier this summer to join Paris Saint-Germain
But Carragher took to Twitter to defend his former club, and to suggest the reason for the Dutch midfielder’s move was simply a financial one.
‘I love Gini but this is not right, social media is a circus & every club has clowns,’ Carragher tweeted.
‘Turn off your notifications & if it’s bothering you that much delete the app! He wanted more money the club said no, that’s football!’
Wijnaldum’s departure was a much drawn-out one, with Jurgen Klopp seemingly keen to keep him at the club but the owners less keen to splash out on a big-money new deal for a player who will turn 31 later this year.
Wijnaldum claimed he was not shown sufficient appreciation from those inside the club
As a result, he was able to sign a lucrative deal at PSG after joining them on a free transfer.
While not saying so directly, the midfielder’s comments suggested that it was the club’s hierarchy who he feels did not show the respect he deserved.
‘There was a moment I didn’t feel loved and appreciated,’ Wijnaldum said. ‘Not [by] my team-mates, not the people at Melwood. From them I know, I can say they all love me and I love them. It was not from that side, more the other side.’
And Wijnaldum also took aim at fans on social media as he felt he was being singled out for criticism after matches.

He said: ‘I have to say also there was social media. When it went bad I was the player who they blamed – said that I wanted to leave.
‘There was a moment when I was like ”wow, if they only knew what I was doing to stay fit and play every game.”
‘You get players in their last year who are like, ‘I’m not playing because it is a risk’. I did the opposite. I was training hard, I was giving everything. I didn’t always play good but after the game I could look in the mirror and say ”I trained hard to get better”.’
