Covid-19 Australia: couple breach hotel quarantine for food after driving from Melbourne to Perth

Couple who drove 3,400km from locked-down Melbourne to Perth are arrested after sneaking out of their quarantine hotel without masks to eat at a restaurant

  • Woman, 54, and man, 49, are in police custody after breaching hotel quarantine
  • The couple travelled from Vic to WA and ordered to self-quarantine for 14 days
  • Pair quarantined in accommodation that was unsuitable due to shared bathroom
  • The man and woman also fled quarantine to eat dinner without required masks

A couple are in police custody after they allegedly breached 14-day hotel quarantine directions to go out for dinner.

The 54-year-old woman and a 49-year-old man travelled from locked-down Victoria and arrived in Western Australia on Saturday, where they were told to self-quarantine for 14-days after stopping at a Eucla border checkpoint.

Both the man and woman were approved to stay overnight in appropriate accommodation in Norseman before proceeding to Rockingham, in Perth’s south, to complete the rest of their quarantine period.

The couple are remanded in custody until August 9 where they are due to appear at Kalgoorlie Magistrates Court

Police allege the couple breached their conditions by staying in a hotel unsuitable for quarantine due to the hotel’s shared bathroom facilities.

The pair were then caught eating dinner at a public restaurant during which neither wore masks as required.

WA Police charged the couple with failing to comply with a direction and are due to appear in Kalgoorlie Magistrates Court on August 9.
