Alun Wyn Jones believes many won’t get the chance to redeem themselves for decisive third test

Alun Wyn Jones said his Lions only had themselves to blame for their second Test capitulation, and now their heads are on the selection block for the decider.

For the third series in a row they must win the final Test to taste victory – which the 2013 Lions managed in Australia when captained in Sydney by the Welsh lock.

But captain Jones said many may not have their shot at redemption when Warren Gatland selects his side for the decider this week after performing badly in the second South Africa Test.

‘Everyone is well aware that Gats will make changes,’ he said.

‘There will probably be opportunities for some and a feeling we can probably put it right.

‘This week is going to be a big week, it will be interesting to see what Gats does with the team.

‘Immediately after the game we got together and said we had to stick together. Gats is notorious for making changes and we go again. There has been a lot said about a wounded Springbok. I think the Lions have taken a dent today and we need to put it right.’

Tempers flared in the match with both sides struggling to keep their discipline throughout

Analysing how the tourists lost Jones, the most capped man to play the game – Saturday was his 159th Test cap and 11th for the Lions – added:

‘We probably came second best in the aerial battle and their set-piece turned up this week and put us under pressure.

‘They probably did to us what we wanted to do to them. They tried to do it last week, they probably just did it better, we saw more of it.

‘From our lack of maintaining possession in key areas, and giving away penalties, that just gave them a roll-on down the field, which you can’t do against any team, let alone the Springboks.’
