Manchester United ‘end their interest in Atletico Madrid right back Kieran Trippier’

Manchester United ‘end their interest in Kieran Trippier, with the club baulking at £34m fee’ with Diogo Dalot starring in pre-season… paving the way for Arsenal to swoop for the ex-Tottenham defender

  • Atletico Madrid star Kieran Trippier was keen to return to England this summer
  • Manchester United were interested but have now reportedly ended the chase
  • Reports claim that the form of Diogo Dalot means he will now play back-up
  • Arsenal have weighed up a move and United pulling out has given them a boost

Manchester United have cooled their interest in Atletico Madrid right back Kieran Trippier this summer, according to reports.

Trippier, 30, was earmarked as the perfect candidate to provide competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka next season, but United baulked at his £34million price tag.

And now, as claimed by The Mirror, the impressive form of Diogo Dalot during the summer and in pre-season has further changed United’s thinking.

Dalot spent last season out on loan at AC Milan, and it initially looked as though he may return to the San Siro with his chances at United set to be limited.

However, his re-emergence in his position has turned heads at his parent club, and there is said to be a belief that Dalot can provide back-up instead.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been left impressed by the form of Dalot since he arrived back at United, and the Portugal international scored in the 4-0 win over Everton.

Milan, meanwhile, ended their own chase for the talented youngster after United reportedly demanded a £4m loan fee.

Sportsmail reported last month that Trippier was keen to return to England with United interested, and his future is still unclear.

This is because Arsenal are said to have weighed up making a bid of their own this summer, largely due to Hector Bellerin’s seemingly impending departure.

Diego Simeone wants Atletico to hand Trippier a new contract to stave off his potential suitors, The Sun reports, but the full back may still be on the move soon.

United’s failure to land Trippier may very well spell the end of their business in this window after the arrivals of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.

Solskjaer is understood to be pleased with his incomings, with Sancho having trained for the first time and Varane to officially sign his contract imminently.

Sancho joined United three weeks ago for £73m from Borussia Dortmund and then went on holiday after England’s Euro 2020 campaign.

Now back in England, the star forward was all smiles as he underwent gym work on an exercise bike before heading out onto the pitch for more fitness drills.

Varane will join him shortly after his £42m switch from Real Madrid. The deal was confirmed a fortnight ago, but the defender was then forced into quarantine.

He shared pictures on social media of himself keeping fit in his back garden, and is said to be determined to enjoy a flying start at his new club.

Both Varane and Sancho are expected to be named on the bench for United’s Premier League opener against Leeds on Saturday.
