The shocking moment they couldn’t air on Home and Away: Tammin Sursok reveals an ‘intense’ scene was cut out because the network wouldn’t allow it
Tammin Sursok has spoken about a controversial scene she filmed for Home and Away 20 years ago that was ‘too intense’ to be shown on TV.
In 2001, her character Dani Sutherland was sexually assaulted by Kane Phillips (Sam Atwell) in one of the soap’s most divisive storylines.
She told Yahoo on Wednesday she had mixed emotions about filming the storyline, particularly as some of her work ended up being scrapped by producers and reshot.
Looking back: Tammin Sursok has spoken about a controversial scene she filmed for Home and Away 20 years ago that was ‘too intense’ to be shown on television
‘That was the first time as a 16- or 17-year-old that I really got to play as an actor,’ she recalled of the scene in which Dani was assaulted.
Tammin, 37, added that she really ‘delved deep’ in the performance, describing the experience as ‘amazing and thrilling’.
But despite her efforts, the scene of Kane attacking Dani was cut due to objections from the network and had to be filmed again.
Edited out: In 2001, her character Dani Sutherland was sexually assaulted by Kane Phillips (Sam Atwell) in one of the soap’s most divisive storylines. She said on Wednesday she had mixed emotions about the storyline, particularly as some of her work ended up being scrapped by producers and reshot
‘I went as intense as I could go. I was trying to give the situation some gravitas and truth, but they cut the entire thing and made me reshoot it. It wasn’t allowed to be as intense,’ Tammin said.
‘So it was hard for me as a 17-year-old because I just wanted to be able to portray situations as deep as they were, as authentic as they were.’
Daily Mail Australia has contacted Channel Seven for comment.
In scenes that aired in 2001, party boy Kane assaulted high school student Dani in her family home.
In a twisted storyline that would spark outrage today, it was later revealed that Dani’s sister Kirsty Sutherland (Christie Hayes) fell in love with and later married Kane, despite the fact he had sexually assaulted her sibling two years earlier.
Controversial: Two years after Dani’s assault in her family home, her attacker Kane Phillips (Sam Atwell) married Dani’s sister Kirsty Sutherland (Christie Hayes)
Tammin previously spoke about the challenge of portraying an on-screen rape.
‘She tries to resist, but he gets violent and forces her. You don’t see what happens next, but you get the idea,’ she once told Inside Soap magazine.
What actually happened between the characters wasn’t stated explicitly as Australian censorship laws prohibited use of the word ‘rape’ on TV.
