P-plater charged over horrific Londonderry car crash

A P-plater has been charged following a horrendous car crash in Sydney’s south-west that left one person dead and another injured.

Kartik Singh, 19, was behind the wheel of the Audi sedan, which slammed into a power pole in Londonderry on Sunday, Nine News reports.

The teenager has since been charged with a string of six offences, including dangerous driving occasioning death.

Emergency services were called to Carrington Road shortly before 9pm to find the vehicle had left the road and struck a pole, bringing down lines.

While front-seat passenger Navneet Singh sustained multiple injuries and was taken to Westmead Hospital in stable condition.

The driver managed to escape serious injury, but was taken for mandatory testing following the incident.

The group had allegedly been driving to dinner, with police stating speed may have played a part. 

‘If you’re going to drive a car at excessive speed and you end up hitting a traffic pole you’re not going to win,’ Acting Superintendent Robert Toynton said.

The driver is expected to front court on October 12 to face charges, including two counts of aggravated dangerous driving, two of dangerous driving and two of negligent driving. 

Officers from the Crash Investigation Unit have begun investigations, with police urging anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
