Angry voter protests with marker on gay marriage envelope

  • A man from a marginal seat defaced his postal vote survey envelope with marker
  • He scrawled: ‘Please return to sender PM Malcolm Turnbull’ across the top of it
  • The man also wrote in block letters, ‘Unsolicited junk mail’ right across the paper
  • He is annoyed about the $122 million cost of the non-binding poll on Australians

A frustrated voter has written an elaborate protest in thick, permanent marker on his postal vote survey envelope.

The man, from a marginal seat on the New South Wales Central Coast north of Sydney, declined to fill out his envelope from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, because he is annoyed at the $122 million cost of the non-binding poll.

Instead, he scrolled: ‘Please return to sender, PM Malcolm Turnbull.’

He then posted back the ‘unsolicited junk mail’ to the federal government agency’s postal address in western Sydney.

On top of the plastic window on the envelope, he wrote: ‘Government needs our prayers, not plebiscite.’

‘This poll is farcical because: it is not mandatory; not binding on government; the funds can accommodate 1,000 persons needing a home. Shame,’ he said.

The former Salvation Army volunteer, who lives in the marginal seat of Robertson, is also opposed to gay marriage but is annoyed the government didn’t hire a reputable pollster like Roy Morgan or Gallup to survey Australians.

He posted a picture of his defaced envelope on his Facebook page on Tuesday with the message: ‘It’s in the mail. I posted this plebiscite correspondence today with the message I declared earlier.’

His local member Lucy Wicks helped launched the ‘No’ campaign against gay marriage in Sydney on Saturday night.

Frustrations are boiling over across Australia as ballots are sent out to households this week, with voters given a November 7 deadline to return them.
