  • Woolworths has restocked its cult favourite meerkat statues in Australia
  • The $8 ornaments are back on shelves after enjoying ‘huge popularity’ in 2020
  • There are 35 characters to choose from, including fairies and Olympians
  • Woolworths sold a staggering 60,000 meerkats in less than a month last year

Quirky garden ornaments that attracted a cult following across Australia last spring are back on shelves at Woolworths.

In response to unprecedented demand, the supermarket is once again selling meerkat statues, with 35 characters to choose from including Olympians, fairies, brides and grooms from $8 a piece.

The new collection includes Garden Meerkats and Disney Statues, as well as solar-powered light-up meerkats for $20 and $5 DIY meerkat painting kits.

Last September, Woolworths CEO Brad Banducci revealed a whopping 60,000 meerkat statues had been sold in less than a month.

The store had doubled its order in 2020 but still managed to sell the equivalent of 2019’s stock in the first week as shoppers snapped up meerkats in record numbers.

Woolworths general manager for everyday needs, James Hepworth, said the supermarket was ‘excited’ for the restock after the statues enjoyed such ‘huge popularity’ last time around.

‘Customers exceeded our expectations for demand with these meerkats last year, and this year they’ll find a range of new and quirky designs and personalities as a way to get families out of the house and in the garden,’ he said.

Demand for gardening and DIY products has soared since the pandemic began in early 2020, as people spend an increasing amount of time at home.

Australians bought more plants than ever last year, with the country spending a staggering $2.6 billion on more than two billion plants.

All items in the meerkat range are available online and in-store at Woolworths from Sunday, August 29, but only while stocks last.

Woolworths is also selling 34 Australian wildlife-themed garden ornaments that will give back to the environment.

The store will donate 50c from the sale of each item going to WIRES to support the rescue, care and feeding of sick, injured and orphaned native wildlife.
