Care home opens up its own PUB dubbed the ‘Caring Arms’

Pensioners at a care home can enjoy a pint in a pub aptly named the Caring Arms.

The pub, created in The Grange in Tewkesbury, has been a ‘hive of activity’ since it opened four weeks ago.

Residents have even been asking other pensioners out on dates to their new local boozer.

The Caring Arms has a painted sign, a traditional bar with wood panelled walls, glass tankers and pints on tap.

It is located on the ground floor of the care home and to make the experience even more realistic, a corridor has been kitted out with paving, hanging baskets, a telephone box and street lighting.

A bus stop has even been created in the care home.

Speaking to MailOnline Chris Gray, who works in marketing at the care home, said: ‘It is something unique, to give residents the experience of going to the pub.

‘Care homes can get a stigma for a certain environment but this is a new experience for residents. It opened four weeks ago and it has been a great success. Residents have been asking each other on trips to the pub and out on dates.  It’s a social hub.

‘It takes residents out of the care home environment and it actually does feel like going to the pub.

‘We’ve had ladies wanting Gin and Tonics on Sunday, and we’ve had residents coming in playing dominoes, card games and Scrabble. It’s a hive of activity.

‘They came up with the name and we also asked people on social media, so we have got the residents involved. This idea could absolutely take off because of the stimulation it gives to residents and the sense of freedom it offers.’

One resident commented: ‘It’s perfect. We’re playing dominoes and cards and having a laugh, and that’s good for all of us!’

The pub is stocked with a selection of beers, wine and spirits, all of which are included in the care home fees. It also acts as somewhere for visitors to catch up with their loved ones.

Group manager Natalie Bonner said: ‘We wanted to enable residents to enjoy the whole experience of going to the pub, and it really does feel as if they are leaving the care home and going ‘somewhere else.’

‘That’s really important for residents to enjoy that change of scene and environment.’

The Grange, owned by the Cedar Trust group, has 68 bedrooms, all of which are en suite.
