A young shopper has shared her horror after discovering a huge patch of mould growing beneath her brand new $2,500 mattress.

Australian woman Ebony said she has been sleeping with her mattress on the carpet floor while waiting for her new bed frame to arrive.

But after four weeks of sleeping on the floor, the 20-year-old was shocked to find a mould infestation on the base of her mattress and the carpet.

What does it take to ruin a good mattress?

It only takes three main components for mould to grow: the environment it is in, the type of mattress, and the type of flooring it is put on.

Mould is a fungus that grows in moist/wet surfaces that don’t receive adequate airflow. They grow by producing tiny particles called mould spores that float and travel in the air. When inhaled, these can cause complications for people with allergies and asthma.

‘This is a brand new mattress I got for $2500 a month ago. I’ve had it on the floor while I waited for my new bed frame to come,’ she wrote in a Facebook group.

‘I knew the room was damp but I never realised this could happen. It’s my first home I’ve moved into and no-one ever warned me this would be a problem.’

Mould can grow in moist or wet surfaces that don’t receive adequate airflow. They grow by producing tiny particles called mould spores that float and travel in the air.

A mattress on the floor can absorb and retain moisture from body sweat and heat, without sunlight to dry it, which is a breeding ground for mould.

Ebony turned to the internet for help, asking for any tips on ‘saving’ her mattress.

However, many urged her to replace the mattress due to serious health risks.

‘Unfortunately you can’t save that mattress for your health’s sake, it’s too far gone. I think same with the carpet,’ one wrote.

Another explained: ‘This happens when you put a mattress on the floor regardless of the house because when you sleep your body heat gets trapped. This is why beds have slats or holes on the base.’

While one added: ‘This will happen to any and every home if a mattress is used on the carpet and isn’t stood up every day to air out. The moisture has nowhere to go, there’s no air flow and it’s a breeding ground for mould.’

Ebony later updated everyone, saying she has no choice but to buy a new mattress and cover the cost of a carpet installation.
